Westone UM3X and UM2: now with removable cables!
« on: July 10, 2010, 09:49:36 PM »

Quote
"Westone Music Products has announced the addition of the removable cable option for the Westone UM2 and UM3X.

Westone, known for having one of the best cable designs in terms of durability and overall quality, now gives users the ability to enjoy that same quality with the quick option of replacing cables as necessary. The signature sound and professional grade components provided by both the UM2 and UM3X will remain the same with the removable cable versions. The original hard-wired design will still be available for the universal musicians’ monitor lover.

The new removable cable versions will have updated packaging offering new and additional accessories. Each unit includes a “fit kit” with a selection of ten universal eartip options. A zippered carrying pouch, 1/8” to 1/4” plug adapter, a wax cleaning loop, and inline volume control complete the package. Potential customers can go to westone.com/news for more information or to find a local retailer."

Awesome news for those on the fence about the UM3X as well as the UM2. The UM2 is kind of the black sheep in the Westone IEM lineup though, as FWIR the cheaper Westone 2 surpasses it in performance.

I do like the fact that the UM3X now comes with more accessories and tips.

SRP:

UM2 w/removable cables - $300
UM3X w/ removable cables - $400

Similar, but there are obvious differences - the UM3X housing is more rounded, while the SM3 has a more angled/boxy look.

I also have the Westone UM-3X. I agree with Zinv's sound impressions. The bass feels lacking sometimes but the naturalness of its sound is quite impressive on acoustic instruments.

Since this is a pro monitor, it is not designed to have any bumps in the frequency response. I guess that's why the bass doesn't feel full.  One thing I do to make the bass feel bigger is to make sure the wire is snugly fit around the ears and neck. I think it helps the comply tips get a tighter fit.

The soundstage is also smaller than my old Triple-fi but it does seem more natural in placement of musicians. The Triple-fi seems much larger than life sometimes.

I've been using my um3x for 4 months now interchangeably with my IE8.   While the um3x is a more refined piece of gear compared to the ie8, I find that i enjoy the music more with the ie8.  I guess this confirms (at least for me) that um3x was really designed for monitor use and is suited for more analytical listening.  Others may disagree with me on this point.

Anyway, i've decided to keep only 1 iem and that means the um3x will have to go.  Cheers.

just got these a while ago..um3xrc.

comfort is topnotch. the round housing is indeed comfortable, i would say otherwise in regards to the memory wire, time to get used to it again ala tf10 days :)
too much tips on the package only used the gray one, seems it gave a comfortable fit, will try other tips maybe sound may change, though i like the sound right now...

isolation is top notch, when music is on even at low levels, external sounds/environment is silenced or muffled (jeep horns). used the gray tips.

seems like i wont be missing so much of the sm3, ive read reviews that this iem is boring and purely for stage monitoring purposes, yet i find it good for the music i listen to, mostly acoustic and instrumentals... though i miss the bass of the sm3 (in regards to rnb music)... but the bass on the um3x is good, not as thumpy as the sm3 per my recollection but presence is definitely there, but one thing that calls my attention each and every track i listen to is on how the musical instruments are separated... which i liked...

well that's it... im not good at reviews and above are my impressions.
this iem might not be for everyone, but i guess i made the right choice...well confirmed with the poison master bro shoks (pk2? :))) and the um3x guru bro mikado.. :))

worth it... this might be my end all journey towards iems... until customs :)
it is not about the "cost" of the rig, but on how you "value" it.

Congrats bro. Pair it with better amps. I read it scales well with amps unlike the SM3s. :)

Try the pico slim. :) I know the maker of pico amps uses Westone IEMs to tune his amps. But that's with customs though. :)

funny i read some reviews disliking the um3x, saying it is just boring, but i hear it differently... i like it and seems that the um3x has what ive been looking for...  :)

one happy camper here...
