Beyerdynamic T50P unboxing
« on: August 08, 2010, 04:47:53 PM »
Here it is everyone, the most 'un'secret secret weapon, just arrived in from Vancouver, Canada on Friday night, rested and watered and waiting for me at Pancake House, LG, Megamall (lol.. airwax did you guess right or were on the roof?)

Beyerdynamic T50p

Unboxing shots

The box itself is much smaller than I thought, the cans are certainly more discreet and smaller than say the HD25-1 II or anything in the same class. I would call it the equivalent of an Onto type design only classier, stronger and about 30% bigger.

Contents

Will true to the German spirit of austerity and brevity, when you open the box you get right to the point. No messing about with flaps, plastic encasing or delicate Mexican food type folding - yup open it up and there is the case in the box with cans and accessories inside ready to take out. I guess Beyer really don't want us to marvel at their origami skills because they simply do not have any in the packaging department.

Open up the beautiful case, (held together with a velcro strap and not zipped but contoured in such as way that both top and bottom mesh together real nice), and you get the star of the show, the cans and the accessories which are:

1/4 adapter (gold plated)
airline adapter (gold plated also) - I think I have about 3 of these now lol :P
little green wire holder (great idea)
and the.....

Headphones!  :D

The Cans

because it is all about the cans, right? :)

The brushed metal feel is awesome, more business like and spartan than the andriod feel of the HD25-1 II, little more 'complete' in that case, more contoured.

Would I say it is as durable as say a HD25? Not sure on that, the metal is very thin but very durable looking and is unlikely to snap that is for sure! The weak points in these cans might be the rivets.

The rivets allow the cups to swing flat and in position giving that mobility signature you come to expect from this class of cans, but I suspect if there is a potential stress point, as there are in any set of cans, it is likely to be there.

Not that I will go looking to test that :)  In all for durability I will give these a potential 8 out of 10, will reserve the extra 2 after a month of use to see if the rivet connection is just me being super careful ;)

The wiring

Separate wiring (super small y junction and very discreet) to each cup is giving me confidence :)

Super thin though and not detachable so whilst still going for that integrated feel which gives it more streamlined and sexy look than the HD25, it does feel a little less durable than the sturdy wiring of the HD25 and of course re-cabling upgrades on this unit are likely to be a specialist job rather than a quick change for HD650 wires.

Unboxing conclusion

Is there one? lol.. This is a German manufacturer so don't expect frilly bits, multiple manual booklets, free mp3 offer from emusic (yeah you get them also??) and other stuff, you get exactly what you bought it for plus a damn nice case.

OK so that is unboxing - off now to listen to them

Which by the way will not be straight out of the box sounds as the store in Canada very kindly did 10 hours of burn for me before my friend picked them up - cool customer service or what??  ;D

Testing gear so far: Winamp (EQ rock preset), Nuforce UDAC out to t50p

out of the box no idea as they technically had 10 hours already burnt in lol... so I think I am judging them after 10 hours:

1 word - nice treble, very clear - so this is the new Tesla driver?

Sound stage naturally smaller than full size cans but pretty good actually for a an on ear closed can.

Listening to the intro now of David Guetta "Sexy Bitch" and the separation is excellent, good with male vocals.

Bass does not overpower.. I was going to say very underpowered in that area, but I adjusted the plethors a bit to sit a bit more forward .. yup there is this bass.

Very little coloring to be honest, if any it favors the treble since obviously this is the Tesla goodness running through.

Mids are pretty clear,  low mids is where the depth is really added rather than in the bass department itself. Bass is tight, controlled, no booming or muddiness - almost the mortal enemy of my old bose qc15 :P

if I clamp them a bit tighter the bass is excellent - but I am at the lowest click :( dang, need to make my head fatter :P

I think these cans are going to favor the jazz, acoustic and classical crew rather than the hip-hop massive overall though but I got plenty of that stuff.

I shall call them my noirettes at burn point hour no. 11 :P

now to try the out of the box impressions with the mullard powered little dot 2 :)

Wow, they are pretty small, comparing them to the headphone jack. They look larger in the manufacturer photos.

lol. Decided not to go to megamall today. Had a lot of things to do, (washing clothes,
ironing, cleaning the apratment,.. where's the wife when you need one?)

Congrats on the new T50p marcus.
Possible trade in the future by the looks of it. :)

yeah they are much smaller than say the HD25's, thinner and smaller footprint on your head.

The detail on these cans is exquisite design and sound wise :) reminds me of a baby k7XX series with slightly smaller sound stage.

Right now I would say they will not satisfy the bass heads among us unless you hold them right tight to your head but I am liking that right now so maybe after all I am not the bass head I used to be... dang FLAC is really a reeducation to my ears these days.

your right, this is not a colored bass happy fun can - after all it is built in Germany lol.. but it handles those finer moments with so much ease and clarity.

Its like spending an evening at an art gallery, followed by some fine wine, cheese, a bowel of pasta and a walk home with some well.. German bird I guess haha..

As opposed to clubbing with your mates at the local boozer and staggering home in a taxi with some cheap Miss right on the night haha... fun but ultimately not very educating ;)
