Encore Enma 7.1 soundbox question
« on: February 21, 2012, 11:34:41 AM »
Hi I was wondering whether the digital out of ENMA outputs true 7.1 surround sound and not just virtual surround sound?

I was thinking of using this in combination with the Turtle Beach X41 (which only has digital in) so that I can game in surround sound not only in xbox 360 but also in PC.

Hoping that the members that have experience with the product can help, Thanks a lot! :)

It's at the very least true 5.1. I'm not very familiar with 7.1 and how it outputs to speakers, but the ENMA's connectors definitely support 5.1.  The ENMA doesn't do virtual, what ever channels the source has, that's what the ENMA keeps.

As for using it with the X41, what digital in does the X41 have? The ENMA has a TOS Link I believe which is how it outputs to 7.1, if the X41 works with that you should be golden. I must apologize as I did not test the optical out when I had the unit, as I don't have any gear to test it with.

The X41 has a toslink in as well. I got the ENMA as a birthday gift, It's great for an external soundcard, and for surround sound pc speakers, but I don't think it outputs 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound through the DIGITAL OUT. When you install the firmware from the cd or encore website, the only option in s/pdif out is PCM, which I think is only 2.1.

maybe there's a different driver I should install? anybody got any ideas?

yes you are correct..optical out of ENMA is only in 2.1, you can't get 5.1/7.1 when using the optical out of the sound card.

That's too bad, I was hoping that it'd be a cheap solution to get surround sound on my pc.. Soundcards with surround sound digital out are expensive. It's still a great product though. :) Thanks for the confirmations!
