just acquired some 24bit/192khz recordings and played it through the D3 and the crossroads edge amp... i noticed that in a couple of sample tracks, in several parts of the them, the sound disappears or distorted... is it an issue of the DAC or the dynamics cannot be handled by the amp?

is this some sort of clipping?

I also have problems playing back 24/192. It skips a lot. I wonder if FiiO has a dedicated ASIO software for this or something to cure this problem. Its not a big deal for me though since I mostly play 16/44 files anyway.
There is no such headphone that is perfectly neutral. What matters most is to get the cans with the least bothersome set of colorations for the individual using them.

i was just curious about those hi-res files, 24/96 files have no problems though...
so it's the DAC then, thought i had an alibi to justify buying a new amp haha

Oh wait, sorry guys I LOL I got confused. Its my E10 that skips with 24/192. I don't think I've tried 24/192 with my D3 yet.

The D3 is in another room. Its not near my computer setup so I can't really confirm the 24/192 thing at the moment. On the DVD player, it can't be really confirmed either because I'm not sure if my transport can output 24/192. I think my old DVD player only goes up to 24/96... not really sure how it works in outputting data whether it downsamples or keeps data as is before coming out of the digital interface.

I thought the conversion n sampling is only done at the DAC whereas the transport is just merely sending out signals?

Anyway, I m still waiting for my shipment arrival.

The transport sometimes controls whether to output high res or to convert to 16 bit pcm before going to a dac I think. Just like you can set a media player on a PC to output at a certain bit depth before the data goes to the dac.

Would it be safe to assume that as a standalone DAC the D3 would outperform most if not all standalone DACs sub $100?

not meant to hijack the D3 thread BUT just wanna say that the FiiO D5 USB DAC is compatible with nokia N8 via USB OTG  ;D ;D
not as elegant as the E7 but is it good enough... D5 + N8 is super portable  ;D
