FiiO D3 DAC
« on: January 15, 2012, 03:51:28 PM »
As mentioned, looking for comments, feedback regarding FiiO D3.

Main usage connecting to new Smart Tv via optical Toslink into amplifier.(as that currently new Smart LED TVs do not have analog outputs).

Thanks in advance!

May I also ask if the D3 amplifies the source signal?

As per what was described in the website, it is simply a DAC nit a combo.

Furthermore, it's running external power supply via AC adapter.

It's always good to have separates.

I already have my amps driving my speakers!

I have a review on headfonics of the D3. Long story short, they sound way better than you expect for the price. Dare I say it is better than many dacs even 10x the price. Buy one now, you won't regret it.

Put it this way, reviews will help you decide up to 50% but the remaining factors will depends on yourself.

Manufacturers can always get a ghost writer to review or sponsoring their A&P.

I will always take it w/ a pinch of salt.

Seriously for $30, it is scary good. FiiO did not pay me to do a positive review.

OT;
Mr Charsiewpau is from Singapore, I don't think he can make it to Binan, lol. ;D I'm sure he is just speculating on the D3 and his view on reviews, also I don't think he will be interested in getting a D3 as he owns the Music Fidelity.
Trust only your own ears. Mine are different, lol.

uhhmm against a musical fidelity full size dac the d3 might be pushing it LOL but against something like the built in dac of something like a musical fidelity V8 dac/amp, you might be surprised :)

As mentioned in my thread, I be only needing th D3 for my Smart TV connection into my amp.

I do not own the Musical Fidelity V-DAC at all. I had the X-10D, X-Cans that's all.

I am skeptical about the reviews as that all these brands/makers only spring out the couple of years. More than 10 years ago when I jus bought my HD-600 not many of choices n makers.

During those times, there's only makers like Theta, Sonic Frontiers, etc. All these brands strictly manufacture on their strong sides, like Theta & Sonic Frontiers only make digital equipment Cd transport, DAC, Digital AV processor.  Just like Mcintosh makes good amplifiers, same goes to Dynaudio makes good affordable speakers.

When u listen in headphones vs speakers is rather hard to gauge who will be better performer in both sides.

Moreover as I had mentioned my I tension of usage purpose, how I judge things is basing on my references rather than reviews. Does that mean if reviewers are paid n will give very top notch reviews?

Furthermore the local shops here do not carry this particular model. It's only avail through online ordering, so does that mean this item is really so VFM, I could not tell. From my business point of view, it's basically demand n supply. The local shop feels the rest of the FiiO products deserve higher opportunity rather than this D3.

For what its worth, I tried the D3 with my compression horn setup and a friends magnepan setup and it was a clear upgrade over an old $1000 Pioneer Elite player and other full sized DVD and CD players we tried over those setups. Anyway, its not really a hassle to try for yourself because it only costs the same as the price of a good steak at a restaurant :)

just acquired some 24bit/192khz recordings and played it through the D3 and the crossroads edge amp... i noticed that in a couple of sample tracks, in several parts of the them, the sound disappears or distorted... is it an issue of the DAC or the dynamics cannot be handled by the amp?

is this some sort of clipping?

I have actually placed an order for couple of units (managed to get some friends to share the shipping together w/ some other stuffs)

Expected arrival either this or next week.

Will update again once the item landed, tested, verified, etc.
