FiiO E10
« on: December 16, 2011, 07:22:01 PM »
Has anyone seen one in the wild? I want to get one but it's not available in the Mobile oNe over here. Any leads on where to get one? Otherwise I might just place an order with the usual peeps.

And does anyone have impressions? I don't seem to see any here.

I've seen and tried a bit one at go gadgets a few weeks ago.
Maybe you can ask them if they still have stock.

Has anyone tried the DAC on this thing? I'd like to know if it's neutral or if the coloration tends towards warmth, since that's the general impression so far as a whole. Sometimes, it's just the amp that is warm-ish sounding.

Maybe you can try out my Fiio D3 since Don mentioned it to sound a bit like the e10 Line out.  ;)

Just got one. Its on Listen Up glorietta and Listening room Megamall for 3350. (its 3700 even on tpc and other sources)

While I do want to describe its sound characteristics and contribute to your curiosities, im not that experienced yet and this is the first dac ive used/heard hence I can only compare it to my sources, Laptop and IPod Touch 4. Nevertheless, I'm in awe on the difference from my onboard laptop's sound. The details are crazy.

In comparison to the ipod touch 4's line out, this is also much superior; more detail, better mids, better soundstage. (sorry im not as articulate as any pro reviewer)

As for the AMP section, i have not auditioned it yet since im using this for my speaker setup. There is a big issue with the headphone out with the IE8i minijack, it is virtually unusable--it is either distorted, or sounds hollow--- unless i switch to a normal minijack (stereo). i heard this issue will be fixed on future revisions.

I was also able to audition this side by side udac2, and for me e10 is noticeably better too. Again, sorry for lack of articulation; I have just tested this 2 hours ago. Will be back with more if I manage to pull off a proper sound review hehe

You will need a nulling adapter for that minijack with mic function, it causes an echoey sound without it. a nulling adapter looks like a short minijack extension, i bought mine at Jaben, Singapore, highly likely its available in the Philippines.

^ Yup, I was able to make it work by using a normal minijack extension. Not sure if there is sound degradation with the added lenght as the sound is still much superior to my amped ipt4 or laptop.

Unnoticeable unless of high resistance, which adds to the load and lower volume but very minimal, but the extra length is cumbersome.

I see. thanks for the info.

BTW a bit OT but still on E10---do you recommend setting 24/96 in the sound properties in windows for the E10, or just leave it to 16/44?

I have tried A/Bing both settings and im not sure if the switch to 24/96 made it refined or my mind is fooled by the lost details when it upscaled to 24/96. I have no 24/96 music files and am concerned which setting is best for 16/44 music.

TIA!

I just got my E10. Testing it with the Merlins and the RSA Mustang, I was able to isolate the DAC section comparing against an iPod Nano 6G. The E10's DAC is noticeably, humungously better than the Nano 6G's DAC -- although we also need to factor in Win7 using Winamp via WASAPI, which might be what is really causing the difference.

It's hard to explain, but the gist is that the Win Amp -> WASAPI -> e10 -> Mustang  setup is just far more alive compared to the Nano 6G -> LOD -> Mustang Setup.

The mids are much more fabulous, the detail is more in your face, the clarity is more tangible and real, the Nano sounds veiled as a result.

This is done testing with some Dave Matthew's Band 320kbps MP3s.

BTW I'm using only 16bit-44.1khz for my settings. I dunno if upping it will improve anything. Why don't I try....

***
Ok I just switched to 24-96. No audible difference to my ears.

I shoudl also note that the e10 -> Mustang combo kicks the crud out of the NuForce iDo.
To be fair, the amp section of the iDo is poo, so I will now hook up the Mustang to the iDo to make it fair. Be right back...

***

Ok the iDo's DAC portion holds its own against the E10's DAC portion. I should note that the Mustang really fixes the issues I have with the iDo's amp.  But the DAC section seems to have the same dynamics and roughly the same tonal balance and presentation. I would need to do a lot of further critical listening to see which sounds better and why, but I'm happy with the results so far.

Interesting feedback bro.

I'm curious about Winamp's WASAPI and will try it out. Is it similar to kernel streaming?

I have only so far compared itunes, winamp in kernel streaming output, and foobar2k with kernel streaming---- so far foobar is superior in terms if providing more (effortless) detail recognition and spaciousness if set to 24bit mode. AFAIK the 24 bit is not utilized unless otherwise specified in the player---in this case, only available via foobar's kernel streaming plugin. Because in my observations, Winamp with kernel and foobar with kernel in 16bit sounds similar.

Overall, Im elated with the e10 and have poisoned me to buy a full/midsize can due to its nice amp.(I only have an IEM)

###UPDATE

Just did a quick comparison between Kernel Streaming vs WASAPI in foobar @ 24bit using the E10. For me, the KS sounds more transparent (considering it is less brighter; probably due to added resolution? its sounds so) & spacious just incase anyone is interested..it may be worth a try on your setup.
