I haven't modified my SR60i... yet :D

The only modified Grado that I've seen upclose is Jolo's SR80. Oh, and some of Sir Ken's Grados, as well.

Those long days passing by from that door, like late summer they slowly fade away...

More like a gallery of Grado mods? Well, this probably won't fit into the DIY section since modifications could be commissioned, so this sounds like a good idea. Here are a couple of "open-faced" ones I was able to take photos of:

there's loads of pictures of modified grados in the team grado pilipinas thread and sr60 - sr80 thread but the thread's long and you'd have to scour to every page just to see them. this might be a good thread to compile them and put them in the first post.

since the title of this thread is Grado Modifications, I'd like to take this opportunity to ask a weird question.

Is it possible to modify a Grado into a closed headphone (to remove/greatly decrease sound leakage)? Does it even make sense to do it?
I like how light and comfortable Grados are, so I was wondering if there is a modified Grado that can prevent sound leakage.

The resulting sound will not be good, bass will be affected much, making it thin sounding, honky and lifeless. Unless you know of a way to mod the drivers itself to adjust to a closed cups, don't even bother.
we remember, we forget.

it is possible to have a closed back mod for grado, but to give you an idea on how it sounds, try covering the headphones with your hands. the bass zeroes and the mids get honky. you will need to enlarge the cups greatly.

It's possible, but that would mean the cups would be about six inches away from the drivers. The way Grados operate require an open space for resonation. Putting a closed palm directly in front of the driver grills kills the sound. Try moving it further away until the sound is almost normal. That's how far the "cup" will have to be.

What he said. :D

Yes, bigger cups will probably work but there will still be a compromise to the stock sound, the Grado drivers are tuned to have open cups. Besides using bigger cups defeats what giedonas like about the stock Grado, light and comfortable (that maybe can be use as portable headphones).
we remember, we forget.
