ATH-AD700
« on: October 26, 2011, 02:14:33 AM »

I pulled my pair out of the cabinet after almost a year. Pads are fine except for the part connected to the plastic cups, which are of a slightly different material and are flaking heavily. Other than that, these are sounding pretty nice, just as I had left them.

Circumaural, open-backed, barely-there comfort level, wide unobstructed spacious sound. Not as immediate-sounding and impactful as the RS1 but there's a much more warm and fuzzy enveloping feeling thanks to the 53mm drivers and the generously plumped up earpads. The highs extend fairly well with these headphones. For about $100, these are a steal if you're looking for a clean, wide, open, basically "audiophile" sound.

This was my main test track aside from Passion, Grace & Fire (in MP3 VBR, paired with the D12 and MiniMAX); I couldn't stop my head from bobbing to the music. :)

I already found a song where I prefer the AD700 over the RS1:

Aobozu - Hoshi no Sumika

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFY7gLrTB9w" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFY7gLrTB9w</a>

The difference is in the highs, especially during the opening section. The RS1's may be more "eargasmic", but I can already tell that for others, it's gonna be like an icepick forced through your skill. The AD700 rides through it without even laying a single thorn on your ear. Rose petals on your pinna.

P.S. I love this song very much. Need more songs/artists that sound like Aobozu. PM me your recommendations! TIA

I like the AD700s too. I was a major fan of them before.

Indeed, there's a lot to like in the AD700. The purple/champagne/gray color combination is one of them, well, at least for my tastes. A good number of HeadPhilers owned the AD700 at some point. :)

I've never seen one in person, as very few people are probably brave enough to wear these outside.  :P

I never really liked the colors based on what I've seen on other websites, but they do look really nice on your pics.

Joma always has a style of photography that makes one feel like they are actually there looking at the item. I don't know what it is, but his photography style from what I've seen with all the headphone pics is a cut above the rest. Sorry if I've offended any other photographers by saying Joma's pics are the best but there I've said it LOL. Well, Dale's V-Moda pics on headphonics are also great but I haven't seen as many of his pics as Jomas headphone pics on facebook :)

waaa ATH-AD700! i've had my sights on these headphones for a long time too, even before joining headphiles. i asked an AT personnel from their FB fan page, and it was sold for a limited time at 5.5k - 6k iirc. are they still locally available?

it's the form (esp. the color combination) that actually caught my attention, and i actually like it.

sir zaaf, how is the bass response of ad700? i've read some reviews before saying it was quite the downside of this hp.

and could you bring them on kenjam2, please? :D
music please...

Ten thousand hertz' worth of thanks for the compliments, Don. Needless to say I'm still continuing to improve my craft, I just hope people don't brand me as a materialistic photog since I take more shots of things than people LOL.

These are probably not available locally anymore. Php5,500.00-6,000.00 was the market price back in '09--still reasonable considering that it's covered by warranty. Getting one from Amazon US is also a good idea, since it's hovering at the $90 (about Php3,800.00) level exclusive of shipping costs.

Bass response is great and not muddy at all, provided you run it through a desktop amplifier. Performance in this aspect is the first noticeable drop if used portably. The bass response loses a lot of decay and the highs become a bit sibilant, in effect making some listeners swear the AD700 has an anorexic low end.

Yes this is coming to KenJam2.  ;)

Agreed. Knowledgable pro gamers use the AD700 as well

I was glad to see a HoN/Dota pro player with it on his stream and I was glad to identify it for the viewers :P

@Za'afiel:
You might want to give that photography contest over at Headfonia (for an HA-160DS) a shot.  ;)

I'm looking forward to seeing (and of course hearing) that AD700 at Kenjam2. :)

I've always eyed these headphones as they're well known for Jazz and Classical. Sad they're near impossible to find locally.

You should try them to this!  :D
