AKG K141 mk II. Truly Amazing Cans!!!
« on: October 20, 2011, 10:30:37 AM »
I just bought a pair of the k141 mk2. I got this particular 141 since i felt they were the better value vs the k142 HD seeing that they are still Austrian made and come with more accessories in the box. They come with two pairs of pads(velour and leather) and a coiled and straight cable plus they are less expensive than the k142 HD.

Soundwise, these are ridiculously good, especially for the price I paid! I didn't expect this kind of sound from an AKG since I didn't like the K701 at all and found the k240S to sound just okay like many of the other AKG models that I've owned. These are way better than the k240 Studio to me. These have a more coherent sound and have no annoying brightness in the 10khz area like in the 240S. These cans almost sound like Grados with TTVJ Flats in tonality and immediacy but are even more coherent and lack that harshness in the upper mids and mid treble that is present in most Grados. Although not quite as detailed and sweet sounding as my Sennheiser HD600s, these have the slam that those senns sometimes lack when listening to some of my favorite 80s new wave or most other rock music for that matter.

When people think of reference supraaurals, one can that most likely gets mentioned in the $200 and under range is the Sennheiser HD25-1. I really don't get all the fuss about the hd25-1s though. I think they are a little nasty sounding due to their cuppy colorations and I find them to sound a little too aggressive yet lacking top end air. These K141s just sound more natural than the HD25-1 II for me, hands down. They might not have the airiness that HD600s have for example but they don't feel like they have such an abrupt rolloff above the mid treble range like the hd25s.

If one wants a slightly more laidback sound, one can switch to the fabric pads that come in the box. The velour/cloth pads make the sound a tad warmer and more relaxed than the leather ones. The midbass punch gets a little more accurate with the cloth pads and the soundstage gets a little wider but the leathers have that extra oomph, that extra high contrast sound that one finds in headphones like Grados/Alessandros. For the $125 including free worldwide shipping that I paid for them, they are pure awesomeness!

If you were using the stock pleather pads on the k240s, the velour pads on the k141 will make better acoustic dampening quality. :)

These leather pads sound so good, they don't even have the typical bloated bass characteristics that leather pads usually give. They don't have any bad plasticky reverb either. In fact, I actually prefer the sound with the leather pads against the velours.

These cans complement my hd600s nicely. The combination of these and the HD600s make me get to focus back on the music instead of my audiophilia nervousa disease. No more equipment for a while :D

I don't know about getting back into the AKG camp except for these because I didn't like the k240s or my sextetts all that much. I didn't like the akg open cans I've heard either (Hated the K701, K501 was okay lang). Maybe I just need to hear a K240DF or a K240M to change my mind.

Then come to the kenjam so you will know what we were talking about. At the same time you can compare the k141mkii with the k141m.  :)

I wish I could go. I have been wanting to do that with all the other meets too but I could never find the time and budget to take a Manila vacation.

For people that are interested in closed supraaural cans, these are the ones to get! The sennheiser hd25-1 mkII has nothing on these. Those sound cuppy and colored in comparison. Theres no contest here.

Haven't heard the k271 mk2 but I hear those are brighter cans. Anyway, these cost me $125 including shipping.

Got them from the link above. They arrived pretty fast too for regular shipping. I think I ordered them around a week or so ago.

I think there's a pair of these in Audiophile Cubao. Maybe I'll strut by and have a listen before heading home later.

I used to own the K271. I still have a rough idea of what it sounds like, I'll try to compare them if I get the chance later.

it's usually not the velour pads that dampen much. it's more free-air compared to pleather. i don't think any modern akg uses real leather like the older models did. it's some kind of artificial pleather of some sort. i used my studio's pleather pads on my sextetts lp and 240DF's and it was weird. didn't feel right compared to the soft leather pads i originally have on my sextetts and 240DF's. my leather pads are still in good shape for being over 30 years old but i wanted to just see what it was like using the pleather pads of my studios on them and didn't like it too much.

the pleather seals better so bass is defiantly more noticeable compared to velour. i never found my 240 studios bright at all when comparing it to my other older 240's as well. seems the 240 studio went the darker and warmer side of things over natural/flat response of the older models. glad your liking them though.

Lets put it this way, these are less airy/darker than my hd600s but almost as forward but still airier than grados using flats or comfies but without the peakiness.
