This Canadian Stax dealer wants to charge me $780.00 as a restocking fee to Trial a pair on 009's. This $780.00 does not include the re-stocking fee they would charge me for the amp as well.

There is not a Stax dealer within 300 miles of me.

So basically it would cost me over $1000.00 just to hear them.

:o The cost of an LCD-2 just to have the SR-009's for two weeks!? That's insane.
The formula of headphone ownership satisfaction is oH = n+1, where "oH" is the optimal number of headphones you need and "n" is the number of headphones you currently own.

Laptop->EMU 0204->HK430->Beyerdynamic DT48//NaNite N2->Audio Technica ATH-2 or Monster Turbine Pro Gold

I need to get to a headphone meet or tradeshow.

You know the crazy part....if they blew me away, I'd buy them.

And it only starts there coz it doesn't have an amp yet right?
As one hf'ier puts it - it's not economically right at that price ;D

I am so curious to hear what a headphone that costs 5x the price
of an Audeze sounds like.

Is it 10,20, or 500% better? What makes the Stax worth over $5000? (compared to other high end at around $1000)

I think I know what I would have to hear for me  to say "yes they are worth $5000".

Not having a large distubution channel would make you think that Stax would have a program in place, that would send out a demo model and amp. Ask for your credit card and charge you if anything is damaged.

I guess I'll have to just keep imagining.

I really don't understand what's inside on this headphone to cost 5 grand. It's insanely absurd in my view.

I've heard the O2s. Probably the best headphone I've heard, but I don't think they're worth the $3000+ they're selling for. It would probably be true for the SR-009 as well- but hey if you want the best, the premium for it is expectedly high.

Collie, can you give me some details of what was so great about the O2s? Do you have a pair of LCD2's? and if you do how do they compare?

I wonder if Stax started today and they released the 009's today, and they actually wanted to sell more that a few of these per year, would they be priced at $5200.00US or would they be at a more reasonable $1200-$1500 price point based on the current competition?

hmmmm....I wonder......

I always need to justify the cost of product A compared to product B. I'm willing to pay for quality and workmanship, but I'm not willing to pay for a status symbol or bragging rights.

Knowing the LCD2 and Grados so well, the Stax would really have to knock my socks off....I mean really knock them off.

I don't have an LCD2, but I've heard it enough times to know its sound.

The O2 were a smoother, more liquid sound. Doesn't have as impactful a bass as the LCD2, but the bass was very accurate. How do I say it, it has a more delicate, more nuanced, layered sound, while the LCD2 is more brash and upfront.

The O2 and now the 009 have had fantastic reviews. I saw one reviewer who had a table full of all the high end models. At the end of the comparison he was giggling on how amazing the 009's are. I'm sure they are outstanding and if i heard them I would probably want them.

Curious to hear what Stax 009 owners think of the new Audeze LCD3 and how it compares to the 009.
