Stax SR-009 Portable amp....
« on: October 03, 2011, 10:55:22 AM »
Does a portable amp (battery powered) exist for the Stax SR-009?

I know the Stax requires high voltage, is this possible?

Nope not portable sadly - the only one that I know off that Stax did was for the Baby Stax Sr001 MK2

Actually, theoretically, the SRD-X Pro would work, but I can only assume it would be like putting ketchup on a piece of Wagyu beef.
The formula of headphone ownership satisfaction is oH = n+1, where "oH" is the optimal number of headphones you need and "n" is the number of headphones you currently own.

Haha oh yeah it's almost(is? You guys are always 12-13 hours behind depending on the DST, but I always forget which one it is now) noon there. :P It's getting close to midnight here and I was starting to get hungry too. I've never had the pleasure of trying Wagyu; it's going to have to be something I try once. The meal might cost the price of an O2 though...

But anyways, the SRD-X is a strange piece of kit.

I have Stax 009 on the brain.

Are you looking at getting a pair?

There is not a Stax dealer within 300 miles of me, so I can't really audition them. I have the LCD2's and Lyr amp. After some tube rolling I have the Lyr sounding pretts special. The Stax 009 would have to blow me away for me to justify the cost of the phones and an amp.

Do you think you can fly down to Rocky Mountain Audio Fest? (Actually...the meet is next weekend, that's probably out of the question.) Try to find a large meet though, because you may find something like...the HP1000 or even O2 to be perfect for you instead of the 009. The cost of travel will certainly be less than the cost of a system you don't like, not to mention the money you might save.

I have spoken to Stax in the past and they told me they would lend me a system on a 15 day trial. I would have to buy it and then return it if I'm not happy with it. I would have to pay for shipping both ways and pay for any damage (if done).

But what if I try them and like them, but still don't think they are not worth 5200$. Do I return them because they are not worth the money?

I figure shipping both ways will cost me well over 120.00 but this is cheaper than going down to the show which I can not attent at this time.

Being home alone with them for 15 days is truly the way to try them out. (better than a noisy trade show).

After all I've read the 009's are going to be a hard one to get off my mind.

Oh, if you are allowed a trial, then yes, it is definitely a better option. Insurance will sure be a killer though. That'd be roughly $7000 in gear.

I just heard back from the Canadian dealer. This time they are telling me they would be happy to give me a trial period with 15% restocking fee. This would mean a $780.00 restocking fee on the headphones alone. That's crazy.

restocking fee is utter BS, I never understood the concept of restocking being a cost. name and shame lol
