HRT iStreamer
« on: September 25, 2011, 11:07:13 AM »
Searched for this but couldn't find it anywhere on Headphiles.

Does anyone have any impressions on the HRT iStreamer? The reason I am asking is because I actually bought an iStreamer on a whim a few weeks ago because of all the glowing reviews of the iStreamer being a great budget DAC for iDevices. I'm about to receive my iStreamer in two weeks, but I am having second thoughts about this product.

As I did more reading on outboard DACs, I realized the iStreamer might not be adequate for the setup I am trying to build. The iStreamer only supports up to 48khz and I want to have a setup which supports at least 96khz. Also, the iStreamer is not portable which is why I am looking towards CLAS instead of the iStreamer.

Anyway, would like hear your opinions on this product to help me decide if I should keep it or sell it.

I've not heard the HRT and do not know much about it, but you open up an interesting question. What exactly is the benefit of going 96khz?  CDs only go up to 44khz and humans can't hear above 20ish.

Personally, I haven't heard any difference when listening to 96Khz and 44Khz, but I only have heard 96Khz music using my headphones. Based on what I read, 96Khz will only be noticeable once you start using full size loud speakers.

The higher sampling rate of 96KHz captures super-high frequencies, which have harmonic overtones that drift down into your hearing spectrum. This delivers a more realistic ambient sound-field effect; when listening to music, it’s like you’re right there with the musicians. And during a movie, the dialogue is so clear, the actors seem to be in the room with you. Plus, 24-bit depth (vs. typical 16-bit) provides extended dynamic range, on a level with professional audio.

^ I don't think they are the same products though. iStreamer is for iDevices.

Isn't the CLAS also for iDevices? I remember it having the "Made for iPod" logo.

You should have gotten the CLAS bro if you'll use it as a portable. Well, you could try it first and hear if you like the sound.

Sorry about that marcus. I didn't create this thread to sell my iStreamer, but to solicit advice if I should keep the iStreamer or not. I sort of want to convince myself to keep it.  ;)

I am leaning towards getting the CLAS. The only thing preventing me from doing so right now is it has to be paired with a separate amp. I'm hesitant on bringing along a triple decker when I go out
