And having tried the Thunderpants and utterly hating it, I am reminded that:

1. Jude also loved the Dt1350. I didn't
2. Jude also loves the Skullcandy Aviators. I probably won't (save the looks!)

I get the feeling now that I should avoid any headphone Jude recommends, our taste in sound probably go in opposite directions.

Given Jude's foaming-at-the-mouth appraisal of the Sennheiser HD-800, it's no wonder his goons were all over the massive Shure 940 thread, assuring his devoted members that the Holy Grail of precision (HD-800) was not going to be challenged by a "girlie" headphone like the 940.

So while the 5 pages of posts on the Thunderpants didn't say much, Jude's review was pretty clear about where he thinks it fits compared to the best headphones of different types.  But more revealing than most of his review was the repeated comments about "treble precision" and how the Thunderpants of course would not be as precision in the treble as those other headphones.  So given my understanding of the headphone user community around the world, and how headphones like the Senn 800 and Shure 940 have treble that's more elevated than ideal, saying the Thunderpants doesn't compare to those other headphones in the treble isn't necessarily a bad thing.  It may be bad after all, but not based on Jude's treble comments as far as I could tell.

And I wonder too, if maybe they needed some extra punchy reviews like the Thunderpants review, to generate some extra publicity for their appearance at the Rocky Mountain audio fest.

The problem with HeadFi sometimes is that you don't know how much of the press releases are genuine love for the hobby, and how much is politics. There was that whole fiasco with the Skull Candy Aviators with lots of people speculating that Jude was just hyping them up because of talks that HeadFi was trying to get SkullCandy as a sponsor. Oh and there's that bit about banning members who talk snuff about sponsor brands.

Speaking of the Aviators.... I still want to hear them. :) these would be great to get Sandmoosed, and if I can't live with the bass light sound I bet I can transplant some drivers into it later or something.

Did you try a smeggy modded one? The same as his? Just curious because he also liked the px200-II which I thought was garbage.

Yup, the TPs I had were Smeggy Pants.  Sherwin and one other member (forgot who) had the same impressions I had. We were so disappointed.

I still think the TPs are the single most overrated product in headphone history.

The craftsmanship is also way overrated. The wood cups are gorgeous. Things end there. The leather pads are cheaply stuck on with wood glue; you can even see the mass of wood glue under the pads. Horrid.  The headband is literally a leather belt cut and wood-glued onto the existing headband.  The entire thing is like a Frankenstein monster of wretchedness. I can't reconcile the awesome looking wooden cups with the slipshod piss poor worksmanship on pretty much everything else.

Speaking of the PX200-ii... I didn't like that one either. Oh, and wasn't that the same one you had? Heheh!

I think you have the right idea dog! Get T50RPs and mod them your way. THe only thing I would like to get from Smeggy are those beautiful wooden cups. But then we have quite a few woodworkers here who do that, someday I hope I can get a t05RP and work it my way.

OK I have decided in January 2012 I am going to source a t50rp and talk to prawn and kirwesee and a few others and we will make a Deathdephiler pants edition that will put the smeggy to shame :P

Gonna note every detail and then let us see what comes of it :)

I had no idea what the Thunderpants are so I had to do some Googling. Funny name for headphones. Also, who's Jude? Some boss at Head-Fi?

The PX-200ii isn't bad if you get the Apple version, and boost the bass and treble a little.  Of course, Tyll loves it as is, so maybe that boost doesn't have to be more than 1 or 2 db.  But I have to give Jude credit.  In spite of his highly recommended on the Smeggy, he did caveat on the sound in several aspects.  He didn't complain about the physical quality, so that begs the question of whether his order got special treatment.  What?  Oh, sorry - I know that couldn't happen.

I already donated my PX200ii to a cat, dog. Sorry. :)

Maybe she'll post here sometime.  Ironically... she doesn't use the PX200ii that much either. Dung is dung I guess!
