Update! Turns out the package Fed Ex left was a notice to pick up my package at the airport and I'm too lazy to drive all the way there for a pair of pads. Looks like you'll get your set first Marcus ;D

Listening impressions:

Highs: The HE6 is quite well-known as having a bright signature, and it can be a bit too much for some people. I'm quite happy to say that the leather pads have made the sound signature warmer. The highs no longer get piercing.

Mids: The same, but now with more emphasis on the lower midrange. All in all I'd say the change is very positive.

Bass: Slightly more impact than the velour pads, but the difference will be quite obvious because of the darker sound signature of the headphone.

Right now it sounds like the perfect accesory for the stock HE6 but there are some drawbacks. One of the most noticable things about the leather pads is that they're thinner than the velours. Because of this, the soundstage becomes even narrower than it was with the velours. It  simulates  something comparable to a crossfade effect  now compared to the old HE6 pads. There's just passable seperation but good depth.

What I like the most about the changes though is that they're so much more comfortable to wear now, unlike the headache inducing grip of the velour pads.

In summary,

Velour: brighter, wider soundstage, less bass impact
Pleather: darker, more bass impact and emphasis, constrained soundstage but more musical and fun sounding

I'll probably switch the pads from time to time since they make the headphone sound so different.

Just got my pads and slipped the first ones onto the He-5 wood edition  ;D

I gripped the pad as a single unit and not tab by tab and it slipped right off no issues. Putting the new one on I did it tab by tab with no issues either. The last one required a bit more caution but no problems - it is nowhere as big a deal as people make it out to be.

pics and impressions to follow also :)

Well, it's been a few months now. Hifiman headphone owners, what do you guys think of the new pads? What are you preferences? :)

I'm definitely for the leather pads even if they do make the HE6 sound like a Grado in terms of soundstage width (which some people might prefer).

Yup i am 100% now in the leather camp, really enjoy them with silver cable in the HE5, the He6 highs are a tad smoother and the He300 is a nice dark can with more bass :)

I need two more sets though for the he5-le and the he4  :-\

Must check early adopters for sq feedback :) Might make it a darker more evil can with leather hehe.

Leather usually makes the sound have more bass, less upper mids and more mid treble than velours from all the cans Ive compared velours to leathers with so if the hifimans weren't tuned to go with those leather pads then the sound might be a disaster.

Very interesting since Audeze is planning to release velour like  pads instead of leather on their rev.2 lcd2, which will be formally released depending on demand. Wouldn't it be better if the customer would have a choice on the type of pads used on high end cans?

Oh, I didn't know you already had these leather pads. Nice to know that the hifimans sound great with them on

It might ruin the company's reputation though if they ship pads that don't sound good with their cans. I think the option is better left as just that... an option to get extra pads of a different type at the company's accessory store.
