the original cables should be good still right so it might be better to cut and re-strip them maybe. i just add extra cable of same gauge to it.

Yes the original ones should be fine as long as they are long enough, they are very flexible too.
I changed mine because I found they used aluminum leads rather then copper = WTF? but it didn't change the sound, the main cable did tame the highs a little bit and reduce sibilance, but the difference is small.
I recommend Mogami 2893 wire, and I'm not the only one who find this cable to be good with K240's, very cheap for what you get, Teflon insulated and durable.
It's stiff and thick, but if you strip it down and take out the internal wires, braid them and pull them through some nylon shoelace or similar, the result will be a very good, fairly flexible cable, with good microphonics.
For strain relief I recommend adhesive heat shrink and cable binders.
It takes a while to make a good cable, but it's well worth the effort.

If you feel brave you can make a Y split cable for dual entry, and then solder the cables directly on to the drivers, in theory this should be better, I have tried it, but honestly it's not worth the trouble.

seems to be priced per foot in most places i look at and seems really cheap as well. i was thinking of doing a dual entry since it seems it'll be more simple but i will look inside the cups see how everything is wired first and figure it out from there. i was curious as well but it seems these older akgs were design around dual entry. do you have any idea if the rubber paddings come off you see underneath the AKG badge?

That rubber thing covers a hole, so it's easy to make dual entry cabling, only the earliest DF's made use of it.
If you don't make dual entry cabling you only have to open one side of the headphone rather then both.

i been listening between my 240DF's and 240 Sextetts LP that i rewired for speaker outputs and it's harder now to tell somewhat the difference apart in a way.

seems the speaker outputs really did improve my sextetts a lot. i do notice the DF's defiantly do have a slighter edge in clarity still but just a bit. just now only difference my sextetts lp are from my 240DF's is my sextetts provide the bass impact feeling where the 240DF's gives you impact on how you hear it instead of feeling. the DF's are defiantly not bass light, you hear part of the music without being accentuated like lot of headphones. my sextetts lp defiantly can accentuate the midbass impact feeling but only if it's in the song cause lot of acoustic you can tell the headphone itself is not emphasizing the bass like from acoustic guitar or bass guitar like most headphones do. it's just there and part of the music like the DF's but the sextetts lp little better providing the accentuated mid-bass impact feel.

i still favor my 240DF's overall and both my sextetts and my 240DF's are my ''precision tools'' of choice especially when  it comes to detecting an album's mastering cause they both will tell you how it's is and let you know the track has been poorly mastered or not. i still prefer these over pair of hd800's i audition when it comes to telling me how it is when it comes to music monitoring. the hd800's i remember were just a nice ''audiophile'' headphone but i wouldn't use them for monitoring.

next i want to try pair of LCD2's cause i heard there flat down to 20hz so i wonder how they'll do as studio monitors and if they can compare.

rewired my 240DF yesterday. i was gonna wait till i bought another 4-pin XLR housing but the left wire came loose so i had to open them up so i was like ''screw it'' and decided to rewire them there. they are completely rewired with 18 AWG silver/copper wire i had. i have 24k gold dayton banana plugs tied to the ends of the bare wire.

also made use of the 24k gold 5-way binding posts i bought at well in an uncomplete housing. it's just a straight speaker box. no resistors. just straight wire to the speaker outputs of my amp. it works well. just need to put the cover back on the box and done. i ripped apart an old coaxial to RCA converter box believe it or not to make the box. it was just a quick decision i made.

the 240DF sounds amazing running off the speaker outputs of my Yamaha R-9 in class A operation. it made them balanced as well cause before they had a shared ground wire and was a 3-core cable. i don't have gain issues with them either off the speaker outputs and they proved a bit as well from the extra juice the speaker outputs provide.

also lucky i did decided to rewire them cause i also noticed the foam inside started to rot away and lucky i got to it before it gotten any worst. need to do some A/B testing to see how they compared to the sextetts LP that i rewired for speaker outputs as well.

EDIT:

i decided to burn holes in the top of the box with my solder gun(man do burning plastic smell) and slide the binding posts in and screw them in that way and i soldered speaker wire to the binding post as well. box itself don't look visually impressive but it works very well. it's an old coaxial to rca converter box i use to use for my old nes and snes days.

My used AKG 240M 600-Ohm should be arriving in a few days, does adding Velour ear pads help the sound at all?

Yes it does. Also, proper amping is very important. :)

Velour has a dampening effect to the sound.  See it to your tastes, accordingly.

Aside from the sound, Velour is much more comfortable, places less heat on your ears, and licks off any sweat that accumulates between your skin and the driver.

Comfort is my main reason, might order three pairs of velour pads from thomann, in Europe.

What i liked of the velour pads is it makes the sound  more focused, in the sense that the resonance caused by the vinyl/pleather is cancelled.

Foam ring replacements
« Reply #192 on: April 03, 2012, 08:21:54 AM »
The foam inserts on my K240 Monitors were disintegrating into the cups, getting stuck on the diaphragm, decided to clean out the cups.
(I've got 2 replacement foam inserts on order from Full Compass).
I made the mistake of trying to open my K240 Monitors cups, first finding out you have to cut the red & white wires to fully open the cups (I did not cut the wires).
And with the cup partly open, have the disintegrating foam ring fall out in pieces.
So does anyone have any recommends for what material to get to cut out replacements for the foam rings?

Went to Petco and bought some Rite-Size Bonded Foam Sleeve ($10). I guess it's a filter for fish tanks.
It's a quarter inch thick and very porous maternal, I think It has enough maternal that I could make about 18 damper rings.
Hopefully the local House Of Foam will have something I can make the foam ring out of.
