I think we're only talking about these because they're at displayed at every powermac branch and they are shiny.

I'm gonna be honest and tell you what I think about these: They are horrible and the M50 sounds better for about less than half the price.

The PRO700s aren't all that horrible. Has anybody actually listened to a pair of these that aren't display units, and out of a decent portable setup even? They're darker-sounding, have less recessed mids, and are overall smoother than the M50.

But the biggest reason why Audio-Technica released a MKII version of the PRO700 is this: The M50 simply reaches far deeper into the bass and higher up the treble, resulting in a more musical and therefore engaging experience. You hear everything. Then there's the build quality issues that have constantly plagued the PRO700. The M50 being priced lower than the PRO700 was the final nail on the coffin.

Unsold PRO700s will probably come back to AT and return to the shelves as the MKII. ;D

P.S. It really is a common business strategy, isn't it? A company takes its under-performing product, recalls, tweaks, renames, remodels, and sells it at a higher price. Sigh.

I had the chance to try both by demoing the shelf units instead of the display/demo units - I had same findings - PRO700 is darker sounding, with less recessed mids and is overall smoother sounding.

I had the same exact reason for picking the M50 - significantly lower price and perceived higher quality build.  My M50's get squished and rubbed against the stuff in my backpack (chargers, cables, plugs, etc) everyday and they still look fresh.  I used the savings to spend on another pair on the other side of the spectrum.

I have a friend who owns one (silver model). As far as i remembered... Its more neutral sound than the M50. lesser bass quantity. Good isolation. I tested it on my Mini3 amp also with my littledot MKII. Sounds fairly good on amp. I think they have a recessed treble, I didnt pay much attention on details that time. but from a Grado user, I think they are. More or less I choose the Pro 700 than the m50. Bass is not really my thing. I maybe be bias.ehehe Ill try to audition it once more soon.

and by the way... He got his Pro 700 at amazon for around 7-8k.

7-8K, now that is an amicable price. The M50 is also at that price level if sourced from Amazon. But then again, the PRO700 Mk2 is only $10-20 higher than its predecessor.

Oh i didn't know there's a MK2 version. Maybe my friend got the mk2 version. He didn't mentioned any MK2 on the Pro 700 the time I auditioned it. Ill ask him again and maybe borrow it once more. Also I forgot to mention. Between the M50 and Pro 700 comfort. Id say the M50 is more comfortable to my ears. What i don't like about the Pro 700 comfort is that it has the same death grip with the HD650 and the small cup makes it even worst. After 15mins of the Pro700 my ears begin to sore. Maybe if your a DJ, You might get used to it. Isolation is par with the M50. But id rather choose the M50 with beyer pads for hours of listening. Its sure is a nice upgrade for the m50's. Ill check back soon when I get the chance to audition the Pro 700 again. :)

Yeah, there's no reason to pick this one over the Mk2 imo ;) It's actually not bad but its not very impressive either which is why I wouldnt pick it over the M50.

I agree about the mids and the smoother sound overall, they're just "meh" to me
If it looks bad CF it, If it sounds bad DENKO it!

There is a good reason why the PRO700 sits on the shelves for a  very long time, they just get the IT'S OK impressions.
I myself am not that impressed. But it is ok. I just won't buy it. :P
