ATH-PRO700 Professional DJ Monitor Headphones
« on: August 03, 2011, 09:53:10 PM »

Type   - Closed-back Dynamic
Driver Diameter -    53mm
Frequency Response -    5-33,000Hz
Maximum Input Power -    3500mW
Impedance -    36 ohms
Weight -    320g
Audio Output -    105d/B/mW
Cable(s) -    1.2M(coiled)Max 3.0M
Connector(s) -    6.3/3.5mm gold-plated stereo plug

Got to try this old (Gold) model out at the Apple Store in Power Plant, directly out of an iPod nano.

I was quite surprised because I expected a heavy "V" since it is classified as a Monitor headphone. However out of the iPod nano's HP-out, the music was naturally lush and came out to be more of a wide "U" curve, with a palpable bass resonance that's hard to ignore. I wished there was more treble extension. Isolation is quite good.

Didn't bother to ask for the price since I already know it's over 20 grand locally. I'd spend no more than 10K on these based on how they sound. Add in the looks factor and one can justify shelling out an extra 2-3K.

I have tried the The GD model in Power Mac TriNoma back in June. I can hardly remember if it poisoned me. Far as I recall, the M50, I had them take out of the box to try, did sound more fun and engaging. The M50 was easier to listen to because of the proper fit and lighter weight it possessed.
The selling price of the GD is 18K.  :P

The Gold model certainly looks good IMO, but I don't think I'm willing to shell out 18k for these headphones.

I wonder when they'll release the successor of the M50. They might not even do so, given that the M50's punch is a lot higher than its price. The PRO700 is smoother and more balanced than the M50.

It makes me wonder what really brought AT to release a Mark II variant for the 700 and not the M50.

GD's still really overpriced. Display units are really a good litmus test to see how these headphones deteriorate with constant use. Even the GD isn't spared and the paint is the first to rub off. :P

The Gold model certainly looks good IMO, but I don't think I'm willing to shell out 18k for these headphones.

I actually prefer the all white model over the gold one, but if I were a DJ, the gold's a no-brainer. ;D

Actually, the gold fades till the white plastic reveals. A major turn off. It is like paying a premium for the gold color but none the less the same specs as the Pro700.  :P

I would agree with the smoothness. I just didn't appreciate it that much then because of my basshead bias. I will have to re-engage with the GD to understand and hear more of the sq of it, compared to the K240M.

I'd take the K240M over this any day.  :D It's a pity AKG doesn't make any bigger DJ-type cans though. :'(

I demo'd this in Trinoma's Power Mac Center. I felt pity for the cans due to its flaking paint and torn off cups. I am surprised though that the nano and shuffle can drive it (though I felt that the nano was already struggling).

Bro Joms, the gold one costs 28k if i recall correctly.  :P

Personally, the sound felt like a slightly-better version than my K240S. Bass was present... just present but not that emphasized. The rest felt smooth to listen to. However, I wasn't that poisoned by it because of the price. =)) I'd take a K701 or RS1 anyday rather than this. /dreamonlol

Now that I recall, the Nano was at maximum volume, playing "I Kissed a Girl", and it was just a tiny bit over my comfort level (where the mids are nice and tasty).

Definitely not worth its weight in gold, but I'd give it points for trying.

Anyway I don't recall listening to the Mark II in the June meet.

The PRO700's claim to fame (well, at least locally) is still as the featured headphones on one of Nina's album covers (white version).

The MK2 is one heck of a colored bass monster to be honest - perfect for dance enthusiasts and people who like to live beside airports.

I also auditioned the unit in powermac trinoma, really loud bass.  I was quite surprised that my ipod was able to drive it even without an amp. Personally, i like them.  But for 28k, its way out of my budget.

the gold one is available at powermac trinoma for 20k.  There's also a black version which is only 12k.  Is there a difference besides the color?  I think 8k is too much for some gold colored spray paint.  But they sound good.  But a little heavy.

The premium is still too high a price to pay for some bling. Of course depending on what you're looking for in a headphone, the gold PRO700 might be right up your alley. I think an acceptable price for these would be 10-12K. They sound slightly better than the M50.

I think we're only talking about these because they're at displayed at every powermac branch and they are shiny.

I'm gonna be honest and tell you what I think about these: They are horrible and the M50 sounds better for about less than half the price.
If it looks bad CF it, If it sounds bad DENKO it!
