Sony MDR-Z1000
« on: August 02, 2011, 10:14:42 AM »
i just heard the Z1000 today c/o Uncle Ken.

It is a damn good can. Lightweight, sturdy build, easy to drive, and very comfortable headband and ear pads.

i just checked amazon and found that it has 2 versions: reference studio monitor and extra bass.

You can also order this thru dinkoy from pricejapan.com at ~18K without shipping.

I just got mine yesterday. Sounds uber smooth. Compliments both my merlins and pro 2900. Mids are heavenly. Jazz, classical, pop, and acoustic are phenomenal on the z1k

Perhaps the best portable cans in the market today?

That is interesting - which one does Ken have? The extra bass might be fun for a portable headphone.

To anyone that's heard them, how was their tonality unamped? I'd be getting them without hearing them if the tonality was good.  ;D

I think they're the same thing. It's probably just a marketing name.

I don't think there is an extra bass version, maybe amazon had the description confused with the Sony Extra Bass (XB) Series.

But there seems to be slighty different outside appearance of Z1000

SONY MDR-7520 400 USD in Amazon

The Z1000 Mike of headfonia used for his review/impressions article.

I hope I can try soon sir ken's Z1000 with stock and mundorf cable :)

They seem to be bassy...they all seem to be the same, and it's regarded to be north of neutral.

The 7520 seems to be the same deal as the difference between V6 and 7506. The 7520 has better matched drivers (more impact. There's a comparison on HF on the two coming soon.) and just a coiled cable instead of the two cables the Z1000 comes with.

I am getting interested to read more impressions on these cans. I wonder how these compare in realism and clarity against the new shure 940s.

don, I hope you can do something like this Z1000/MDR-7520 vs Shure 940 vs Beyer T70 and maybe add the AKG K240 ;)

They are excellent without an amp. Although, i think i would want to have an extended audition to fully "explore" its capabilities. i played mostly female vocals earlier and i think the overall presentation was excellent. i plan to test its bass and PRaT with Massive Attack's Teardrop and Safe from Harm.

Impressions:

Build quality: Very sturdy, the whole headphone is made of magnesium alloy, excellent

Comfort: No discomfort after 5 hours of use unless you have super big ears, pads are made of pleather but of very high quality

Bass: Extends till 20hz, never boomy, just the right quantity for me, takes the backseat compared to mids and treble (more like a subwoofer tucked under the bed but shows up when called for)

Mids: Warm & smooth, so seductive one of the best ive heard, better than the legendary shure mids, im blown away (must be the LCP)

Treble: No trace of sibilance, extends till 20khz (my limit), never piercing, very good

Soundstage: excellent depth but not super wide. a bit hallish. sounds open for a closed can but easily bested by sennheiser hd598

Instrument Separation: very good, every organ easily heard and can be clearly distinguished, superb

Conclusion: A must buy for jazz, classical, pop, slow types of music, still a good all arounder except for bass heavy music (i prefer ultrasone pro 2900 due to faster bass)

Cheers!

My my, magnesium alloy? Just like my camera! Cool.

Excellent impressions. Looks like this'll be a reference headphone sooner or later. :)
