I bought the HD-580 the very day it was available, and the same with the 600 and 650, which was a long time ago.  I think everyone acknowledged at the time that the 600 was a big jump in clarity over the 580, which also sounded more distant.  The 650 was a very small improvement, but almost identical to the 600.  So if the 600 is better than the 650 now, it must have to do with changes that occurred between then and now, which is a lot of years actually.

The sound of the DT-48E should be about midway between the 600/650 and a Stax electrostatic like the SRX MK3, or perhaps a newer version of Stax.  Lighter bass than the Sennheisers, but comparable to the Stax or very close.  I would think the mids and highs would also be similar to the Stax.  If you really would like to see the perfect short review of the DT-48E, it's the first review at this page:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/272007-REG/Beyerdynamic_404306_DT48E_Stereo_Headphones.html

My offer was to send the DT-48E the same way I did the DT-1350.  Who the final owner would be does not matter to me, but the important thing would be to get as many people a hearing with it as possible, so the Headphiles members can be satisfied that they know what it sounds like under ideal conditions.

Dale your far too generous lol.. Don lets get the dt48 roadshow under way  ;D

As we finalize the arrangements, I should mention that since this is a historic product and not a new product, we won't get any support or kickback from the manufacturers.  In fact the mfrs. will dread having any of this distract from their cooperation with Headphiles and Headfonics.  So it all falls on you to keep it low-key and get it to the meets.  My long-term interest in the DT-48E isn't so much the headphone itself - it's the sound.  I would like to get more input from the users on the sound and how the current products compare.  Like, are things improving and current products sound better, or are things just stagnating and not getting better?  I think the DT-48E is good enough to make it worthwhile to try out and see.

Oh, and another BTW, the DT-48E won't compete with anything out there in bass or the high end.  Both are OK.  But it's that Stax-like midrange that people talk about so much, so that's the main deal with the DT-48.  That first review on the B&H page is the best explanation - better than anything I wrote.

Wow, awesome gesture dalethorn!! now THIS is what the headphile community is about!  ;D

O well, if ever there is a line for auditions put me in it!So I guess that puts me after marcus  8)

The shures are my favorite iem due to their lush midrange, so sounds like the DT-48E is right up my alley  :P

Wow that's awesome! DT48 vs K1000 vs HE6 anybody?  ;D

So the best way to be fair to everyone is for Marcus to receive them so that everyone can take a listen then after all that is done, it ends up here with me :)

Oops - maybe someone can move this DT-48 stuff so the HD-600 thread can go back to HD-600.

Hahaha yeah. Your move was so cool, no one cared about the OT.

Anyway, back to topic I am definitely going to be comparing these HD600s without bias against the dt48s. If the hd600 is totally killed in the comparison then I will not shy away from saying so :)

Totally killed is a bit much. Handily defeat is another thing. ;D but it's pretty polarizing.
