I auditioned them during the second Kenjam; just wanted to add that these universal IEMs did everything right: meaning just the right presentation of the music being played, given the perfect balance between mids, bass and treble. What I really appreciated was the bass, which wasn't lacking at all in quality given that a lot of other IEMs can't go as deep as the top headphones without sacrificing accuracy. I didn't find them lacking in any aspect.

The only reason I didn't buy them was that I'm looking for two things in my current gear purchases: wide soundstage and extended yet accurate treble decay, which is what you get with the high end hifiman planars (that don't have wide soundstage). My ear canals are also easily irritated by universals, but you shouldn't concern yourself with that :P

I had them on loan for two weeks - best universals I ever heard and right up there with high end customs :)

To be completely honest bro, I was already planning to put a down on them earlier, unfortunately, after hearing them for the second time, they just didn't blow me away like it sorta' did at the last KenJam. To be fair though, the pair we heard this afternoon was brand spanking new and of course yet to be broken in, but I simply couldn't take the highs, I even tried to EQ the trebles on my iMod, but they were still quite shrilly and overly sibilant to these ole' ears of mine.

Although our good fellow Marvin generously offered to burn them in 'till I come back on Monday, so I'm really hoping their highs will be tamed and its bottom end will open up by then.

I hate to mention this here, given this is the AKG thread, but ever since I took delivery of the UM Merlins, I must confess that I have been listening to them every chance I can, I almost hardly crave for my L's lately. They've just enough warmth on the top end and bass heft that suit my ears to a tee. And as you know, these are my very first customs, and I've got to say that they have these unnerving pin point placement accuracy in headstage, I could effortlessly locate aurally each and every musical instrument, vocalist, and even the audience on live recordings, to the point that I feel as if I could reach out and touch them, it's quite surreal, never have I experienced this with any IEMs before, not even with the demo UM universals at the last GTG, they all sound so much larger than life and unconvincing. However, and a big however, I still do prefer the mids on my L's, they feel somewhat more organic and have a more natural density to my ears. Saying that the Merlins are in a way akin to miniaturized L's to a degree is not very far off from the mark.

Unfortunately, I have to send my Merlins back for a reshell, I can't sustain a perfect seal on them, particularly on my right channel, it keeps popping out, even if I merely smile. And I must admit that I can't seem to listen to them on a prolonged period, my ears do begin to hurt after sometime. I don't know, I might still be adjusting to CIEMs I guess, or the fit is simply not optimal so far. Thus, my sudden focus on the K3003 which feels incredibly way more comfortable in comparison. Again, I'm praying that some burning in on the AKG pair we heard would eventually do the trick for me.

Your sentiments on the Merlins and LCD2 mirror mine pretty much Racio.  I should also note that there does seem to be some kind of "burn in" period for customs to your ears -- in terms of fit. For some people at least. I couldn't stand my Merlins when I first got them, after a few minutes my ears felt really irritated and actually I felt the customs were raping my ears.

Now though I have no complaints whatsoever with the fit. I was supposed to send them back but I'm so happy with them now that I opted not to bother. I do sometimes loose the seal on my right as well, usually when I'm chewing, but typically I'm able to keep the seal in most situations.

Hmm, interesting sentiments guys! If I find time, maybe it would be nice to drop by JBL showroom then.. this is in Megamall right?
Its really tempting to invest in IEM's actually and some CIEM's given the chance but it really has to be a leap of faith to do this sorta thing. Anyway, this AKG should be at least worth a listen or two before we dive in. Generally, people really were very much impressed hearing it during Kenjam2 I think.. So we will see!

Anyway if people are going to have a listen, do inform! Must headover and see this... I am worried though that plugged straight to an ipod or ipad, the sound will really be thin and shrilly...

Thanks for that honest input Senor Racio. As I've said, it really has to be auditioned :P A burned in unit is better.

You know what bro, crazy as it seems, I'm now thinking of keeping these Merlin pair that I have right now as well, and order another pair based on the new impressions Penny made me yesterday. hehe. I'm looney, I know. :-[

They're located at the Cyberzone area 4th floor Bldg B, bro. They really look impressively built, each and every pair are handmade, we were told. Do give them a listen, they might just be your cup of tee, not to mention that the finish on those gorgeous K3003 sure matches your Ultrasone ED8's. hehe. ;)

Yeah, my initial impressions are quite unfair, I agree. The broken-in demo pair at KenJam certainly performed a lot better, however, even then I really felt my ears gravitated more to the universal fit demo Merlins (which doesn't do a true custom any justice, IMHO), I guess I'm simply biased towards warmish/darkish sounding phones.

Just for comparison though, when I received delivery of my bnew Merlins, I never felt they became overly aggressive in the top end. In fact, I thought the very opposite as they were slightly too timid, and eventually opened up. I can't wait for free silver cabling we're supposed to receive from the UM guys, those cables would be nothing less than perfect for these CIEMs. :D

From what I remember, the weight was just right. It's not too heavy like other IEMs like the Monster Turbine series or the Moshi Vortex.

The cable doesnt look very sturdy though, but it shouldnt go awry quickly. I would treat it as a piece of very expensive jewelry that produces aural nirvana ;)
If it looks bad CF it, If it sounds bad DENKO it!
