AKG K550 - Ninja Release
« on: May 19, 2011, 01:14:10 AM »
I stumbled upon this by chance when I downloaded the 2011 AKG catalogue.  Strangely enough, I saw the picture and realized it was a new model that hasn't even been announced on the AKG personal audio homepage:

Someone posted this find in Head-fi as well, but they commented saying "it's positioned above the K701".  I highly doubt this means that it's the next headphone to replace the K701... heck, that's what the Q701 is for.  Plus, it looks a little too laid-back in appearance for me to look like a top-of-the-line model for their Hi-Fi cans.  The numbering doesn't make much sense either for it to be their best.

Chances are, they probably put it in front to bring it to our attention - and it DID work.  I'm interested to know how these sound, as I'm guessing it'd be their entry-level for the hi-fi cans.

EDIT: Another shot of the specs increases my suspicions about these cans.

Wow this one has Grado-like efficiency as well. This would be good for those having a portable setup. Any idea on the price?

Wow, super high sensitivity at 114, these will be easy to drive. I was hoping it was like a K501 but its' not, it's more like a K272 mixed with the K450 series.

beats look smaller. But I secretly love the genuine beats anyway. I was listening to some fanny wang headphones at the istore earlier and they actually sound like what i remember from the original beats. Bassy but the highs sounded very smooth and extended and pianos in the mids sounded great. Too bad these cans look like they are for women only hehehe. The fake P7,000 beats I heard from another store weren't as good as these fanny wangs. The fake beats don't have very good mids.

So back on topic... deep down inside I want a more audiophile version of the beats hence this^^^ hahaha That didn't make any sense. Oh well hehehe I am liking the k44s quite a bit they make me want to buy another closed akg.

my Pros have high sensitivity based on reviews so i wonder ::)

@don

The K44s are cool, no? I used them as practice headphones for guitar and electronic drums, and they never failed to amuse me. Even with my fairly low-end portable setup, they can really shine. I didn't really want to let go of them at first, but it was having fairly lower and lower airtime on me since I was looking for bass at that time, and that was the K44s achilles' heel. :P

Head-fi always lambasts AKG for the look of their products. Well I say people like those can't see style when they see it. The K550s look great, the K7xx series look absolute boss, hell, even the K44, which is fairly low-end, looks great and unique with it's 'dotted for maximum pleasure ' look. :))

yah, very cool. And their bass is great! I feel these have just the right amount for me. If only they have slightly more present mids, slightly less lower highs and clean up the grain... These are awesome. I'm even sent a pm to an akg collector and asked which higher end model is a refined version of these k44s!

No price announced for this as of yet.  I'm curious as to how this will feel on the head given the type of headband design they picked out for this.  Kinda excited for this myself. :)
