Beyerdynamic DT 880

I had the chance to try DT880/600 on a schiit valhalla and some DAP. At max volume I get a very pleasing sound with the highs smoother vs my SS amps.  Its not yet as loud as I want and I am guessing the Lyr's power will bring these cans to new heights :)

I tried out the 250 ohm version in Jaben. I played through my library of songs and it blew me away. Soundstage is big yet not too big, detail is amazing. The sound signature is smooth throughout. I am a neutral/balanced person and the dt880 is an amazing can that delivers great, balanced sound. Bass and treble IMO extended very well too.

I would have to agree. The test unit in jaben has seen a lot of ear time using the best and simple of amps. The 600ohmer would still be smoother in comparison. :)

regarding the 250 and the 600 ohm... is it a night and day comparison? Im planning to get a 600 ohm but upon further review of my gears, seems like the 250 ohm is more compatible

thanks :)

I prefer the 250Ω version over the 600Ω, ymmv. less bouncy sounding, lol. if you can get what i mean. :o

The 600 was actually less bouncy for me. The 250 had better bass IMO (Punchy yet rounded and bouncy hehehe) The 250 ohm had wilder highs though

I owned both the 250 and 600 ohms. The 600 ohms was the smoother sounding one and was less prone to sibilance. It's very very subtle though, about 95% the same.

The thing that I have noticed with anything is if there is a small difference in the beginning that after a while, those differences become what makes or breaks the sound of that model when picking which one is better. In fact, these subtle differences when playing random music could turn into big annoying differences on specific songs.

Well another thing to consider is the amp that you're driving it with, similarly my DT770@600Ω against my DT880@250Ω is more bouncy on a tube amp like the LDMK4SE, also less responsive, bouncy and rounded, i wouldn't call it smoother, just slow.

Have both side by side in front of me now, after a long while i pulled out the 250 from it's comfy case. Just like before, the 600 stayed on my ears longer. Personally the 250 pains my ears a bit when distortions and unexpectedly strong highs kick in. However they seem less tamed and the rough character is sometimes pleasing. Overall the 600 gives the 250 sig a more buttery, velvety finish. I agree with dononus' thoughts on the bass difference.

source is my digibox-lcdtv or mbp - superpro - 30yo uber warm sansui au217. The 880's surprisingly match well with this amp for my regular use: hd cable movies or itunes in my mbp

Ahhh back to headphilin' after a year thank you Lord!
