How will you know that your grado is fully burned in?
« on: March 02, 2011, 10:06:58 PM »
Guys,

just a question for those who had their grados long enough. How will you know that it has been fully burned in?

You'll just "know" lol.

Nah, but really, with something as subjective as burn-in, you can't really say. I'd wager if you already have about 100 hours on it, then it is what it is.

Hmmm. So it is subjective?  :D

The benchmark is at least 100 hrs?

Most things in audio are subjective. Heck, burn-in is not even scientifically proven, yet we believe anyway.  ;)

100 hours is just my estimate, might be different for other people. Personally, I don't worry about burn in and just listen to them out of the box.

I don't bother with burn-in either, they sound pretty good out of the box anyway.
The way our bro  posts is akin to a caffein overloaded Energizer Bunny on steroids who suddenly decided to pop speed pills while downing a dozen bottles of Red Bull! ;D

IMO don't wait for it to get burned in. use it then enjoy it getting better and better than it was new. you'll know when it's burned in when you have the gut feeling lol :P

I remember a thread in the old headphiles proving it scientifically with subwoofers

Still conjecture IMO, since we aren't really sure if it's actually the loosening of parts that affect the sound, if it's psychoacoustic, etc. etc.  :D Probably a combination of both lol.

Yup. Did that too but couldnt take it. Hehhehe. Had to let it sit with white and pink noise for a few hours first before i could appreciate the sound. This was for the sr80i.

Got to hear a gs1000 straight from the box this morning and it sounds great. Full bass and high highs but the sound tend to group in the middle. No separation yet. Tested "welcome to the jungle" by guns n roses. In the sr80 you can hear then guitars in your lower right and the other one in your upper left. The drums and the vocals in the middle.

I wonder what it will sound like in the gs1000 after a hundred hours.  ;D

There are three audio "myths" I am very skeptical of:

The myth of burn in
The myth of boutique cables (cryo dipped and treated, etc.)
The myth of "jitter"

Maybe for huge drivers and diaphragms like speakers and subs, where the material really needs stretching out to achieve optimal sound, it applies (the analogy here is a brand new leather shoe needs to be worn to be comfortable)

But for Headphones, especially since theyve been tested internally anyway, I doubt the impact is as huge.

As said in head-fi, what is most probably being burned is is your brain and ears to the house sound of the can, and not the can itself.

But this is VERY subjective, and others will definitely not agree.

YMMV ;)

burn-in Should be sound (music or pink noise) played louder than your average listening volume

The problem is we play a variety of music. So how will we know that its performance is at its peak? I understand if you only play one sort of music over and over again then you would immediately notice the changes. Is there a standard technical music or sound that experts listen to to know that the hp is at its peak performance?

when I audition headphones I first play heavy bass, clashing highs, beautiful vocals and finally my kind of music.

if it doesnt fit my taste no matter how high-end it is, it wont be on my list
