Hifiman HE-4 - midfi ortho!
« on: December 21, 2010, 10:14:15 PM »
Guys just got a heads up on a new Hifiman HE series, the 4 series and retails for $499 - now within touching distance for most  ;D

HE-4 is the single end version of HE-5LE: very similar sound signature. The HE-4 only has 50% of the magnet in HE-5LE, it is much lighter (350g).

Spec

Freqency Response: 10 to 60 KHz
Impedence: 38 Ohm
Efficiency: 86 DB
Weight: 350 g
Accessories
Headphone cable (OFC) with 6.5 mm plug. Length 3 m / 10 ft
Balanced Portable headphone cable with 3.5 mm 4-pin plug. Length 1.5 m / 5 ft
Earpad for backup *1

the he-5 has been discontinued for the he5-le which I am told is brighter than an lcd-2 but $200 cheaper. I would place the he6 in the same category as the lcd-2 and hd800 but according to headfonia the he5-le gives the hd800 a run for its money.

headfonia has good comparo's on the hifiman range.

It looks quite similar to the HE-5LE, even in size. Would it be safe to say they share the same headphone shell? ???

^@2Roo: Take another one for the team bro! That Quincy trademark is way over rated anyways, they're merely the same ole' 701 with neon green paint splashes. ;)

@Marcus: Same shell huh? Hmmm... I wonder what the current HE-5LE and HE-6 owners' thoughts about that. ::) I also wonder if Sennheiser would follow suit and stuff their HD800 shells with PX100 II drivers and sell 'em for half price as well. I for one am hoping this would catch on! ;D

Those look like velour earpads, nice. Still orthos I assume?

yup but with 50% less magnets than their he5-le - still this is the first midfi one i have ever seen beyond the starter fostex range.

^Well, technically, the HE-5LE are their Mid-Fi level, those HE-4 are somewhat their entry level, an intro or glimpse into their world of orthos, so to speak. :-)

its actually a bit of a squeeze if you ask me, $500 for the 4, $700 for the 5 and $1k for the 6... most midfi starts about 250 upwards in the dynamics - entry would be fostex t50rp surely? :)

anyhow more range, more choice is a good thing. :)
