NuForce Icon HDP
« on: July 11, 2010, 03:31:15 AM »
Weeee it's out. The secret weapon. In stock. Ships on Feb. 12!

It's the uDAC's big brother.

Features:
•    USB 2.0 Full Speed compliant and 1.1 supported, 8-96kHz/16-24-bit
•    S/PDIF input: Coaxial up to 192kHz/24-bit or Optical up to 192kHz/24-bit
•    Analog input:  3.5mm or RCA input
•    Audiophile-grade DA converter
•    Low-distortion, high-current headphone amplifier
•    High quality analog volume control

The Nuforce Icon HDP incorporates a full-speed USB DAC and full-function S/PDIF D/A converter, plus a headphone-amplifier circuit and preamp output. Supporting digital USB, S/PDIF in coaxial and 3.5mm optical (3.5mm) modes, along with an analog line input, the HDP's flexibility has been designed to accommodate all manner of audio devices. Icon HDP is expected to compete with other DAC and preamp costing up to several times its price.

As the heart of the music enthusiast's desktop system, the NuForce Icon HDP works in perfect harmony with the NuForceIcon Amp/30 as a physically small yet impactful audio system.

Note: Icon HDP uses the same DAC as the high-end CDP-8 (MSRP $1450.00) and similar preamp as P-8S (MSRP $1650.00).

pros: optical out

cons: $$$

why can't they build the udac with an optical in?

Exactly my sentiments as well. This is why I'm still considering the SuperPro over the uDAC. But if the uDAC gains an optical in, it might need an external power supply.

Then again if NuForce lowers the pricing on the HDP, we can add it to the mix.

Guys, since the iDo basically uses the iDevices attached to it as a HDD, I assume it might not play FLAC; this plus the iPad works with some USB DACs, has anyone tried using the HDP with an iPad?

@Don,

Contact sanjay; i don't see the HDP's price on their thread but when I chatted with topper at the HiFi show last November it was 22k+. Didn't get to listen well enough though since there were speakers playing at the time, but it seemed promising.

You are right it will not play flac as idevices by stock do not play flac but rather ALAC so you will need to convert your flac to alac to play them via the ido, SOLO etc.

Take note, as per Polk Audio personnel who look over NuForce stuff at Listening Room, there's a discount for cash purchase. I guess the cash price for the HDP is P19k+ if I'm not mistaken.
